Rent, don't buy your on-premise Exadata

As I described last week, Oracle recently announced that you can now put their hardware and cloud software inside your own datacenter with the Oracle Cloud Machine.

They now seem to be going a step further with the possibility to run Exadata-as-a-Service inside your own data center. In effect, you tell Oracle that you want to buy some EaaS services and let them install an Exadata box in your data center.

So far, Exadata has only been available to customers who didn't mind their data residing Oracle's local data center, or to large customers with the need and financial resources to buy their own. If this new box comes to pass, it will make Exadata available to a lot of highly regulated and/or conservative organizations without the up-front cost of buying the hardware.
